(Although Them Crooked Vultures don't condone that term.) Zeppelin fansite Lemon Squeezings is speculating that Jimmy Page may have joined with Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, as well as Eric Clapton, for a new project.
The site reports that Page, Clapton, and the Aerosmith members are among the guitarists recording with engineer Kevin Shirley, who was behind the reissue Zeppelin's Song Remains The Same soundtrack and their How The West Was Won DVD. The engineer says he's been behind some "high profile projects" which he's been keeping under wraps.
Today, Shirley wrote in his online diary that he'll be "producing what has the promise to be one of the most exciting 'supergroups' to come around in a long time". Of course, he's wise enough to realize that you can't just put a bunch of great musicians together and necessarily expect brilliant music.
"Theory is just that until we see how the dynamics play out in the studio between these superb musicians," said Shirley. "And of course the songs will make the real difference."
This certainly sounds like it has a lot more potential than just Aerosmith with a different singer. And it would provide (hopefully) friendly competition for Them Crooked Vultures. Let's see how this one pans out.
